Knowing if your pitch deck is a winner or loser is not always clear. The venture community likes to project false positivity and tries not to give direct feedback for fear of founders getting defensive or feeling crushed.
I feel it is a disservice to founders pouring their heart, blood, sweat, and tears into their businesses not to get direct and constructive feedback. Recognizing the need for candid and constructive insights, I recently hosted a deck roast event exclusively for Thunder community founders.
What to Expect at a Deck Roast above:
Brace yourself for an immersive experience designed to propel your pitch deck to new heights. The deck roast entails:
- Direct constructive feedback
- No BS: No sugarcoating, just honest assessments.
- Design feedback: Uncovering the visual strengths and areas for improvement.
- Story and flow feedback: Ensuring a compelling narrative throughout your deck.
- Overall fundability assessment: Determining your deck's potential for investment.
Scoring System:
Every deck was meticulously evaluated, receiving a final score ranging from 0 to 5:
- 0: Deck incomplete or of poor quality, I couldn't even get passed through the first few slides.
- 1: Lack of effort apparent in the deck: I don't believe you put any effort into your deck
- 2: You have some pieces of the deck that are coherent, but I'm not convinced to pursue a meeting with you
- 3: Potential misalignment between a solid business and a weak deck or vice versa. You might have a good business and a bad deck or a bad deck and a good business
- 4: Close to greatness, with minor details or gaps to address.
- 5: Investor-ready and you're ready to get funded now
Companies in the Roast:
During this event, I took on the role of a venture capitalist, assessing decks from esteemed companies such as
- CO2Pulse
- ViaTechMD
- Queen Beauty
- CartaMe
- Splitz
- HumLife360
- Farmshare
Each deck was scrutinized to gauge VC reactions, offering founders valuable insights.
